Building the Technology Infrastructure Behind a State-of-the-Art STEM Facility

Storrs, Connecticut | 118,000 SF | Six Stories | Completed 2018

General Contractor: Fusco Corporation
Architect: Mitchell Giurgola Architects LLP

Project Overview

The University of Connecticut’s Engineering & Science Building was designed to support advanced STEM education, research and collaboration at the heart of the Storrs campus.

The six-story, 118,000-square-foot facility required a comprehensive technology infrastructure capable of supporting a modern research and learning environment while integrating communications, wireless connectivity, public safety and building technology systems.

SystemOne partnered with UConn and Fusco Corporation to deliver the building’s technology infrastructure as part of this major campus project.

The Challenge

A modern STEM facility requires significantly more than basic network connectivity.

The technology infrastructure needed to support a large, highly connected academic environment while coordinating multiple systems throughout a six-story facility. The project also required integration of telecommunications spaces, fiber backbone infrastructure, wireless systems, public safety communications and specialized emergency communication systems.

SystemOne’s scope needed to be installed and coordinated within an active, complex construction environment while meeting the project’s schedule and performance requirements.

SystemOne’s Scope

SystemOne provided a comprehensive technology infrastructure package that included:

  • Cat6A structured cabling systems
  • Single-mode and multimode fiber backbone systems
  • MDF and IDF telecommunications room buildouts
  • DAS infrastructure
  • Wireless systems
  • COAX cabling
  • Outside plant cabling
  • Conduit infrastructure
  • Code Blue emergency communication systems

The SystemOne Solution

SystemOne’s project team designed and installed the communications infrastructure required to connect the building’s classrooms, laboratories, offices and technology systems.

The project incorporated both copper and fiber infrastructure to provide reliable connectivity throughout the facility. MDF and IDF telecommunications spaces were built out to support the building’s network architecture, while wireless and distributed antenna systems extended connectivity and communications throughout the facility.

SystemOne also supported specialized public safety and emergency communication requirements, including Code Blue systems.

Construction Coordination

Large institutional construction projects require close coordination between the owner, general contractor, design team and specialty subcontractors.

SystemOne worked with UConn and Fusco Corporation throughout the project to coordinate technology infrastructure installation with the broader construction schedule and other building trades.

The result was an integrated technology infrastructure package designed to support the facility from opening day and adapt to the evolving needs of a modern university environment.

The Result

The completed Engineering & Science Building became a major addition to UConn’s STEM campus and a highly connected environment for education and research.

SystemOne’s technology infrastructure provides the communications backbone supporting the building’s network, wireless, fiber, public safety and emergency communication systems.

The project was completed on time and within budget.

Why This Project Matters

The UConn Engineering & Science Building demonstrates SystemOne’s ability to deliver complex Division 27 technology infrastructure for large-scale higher education construction projects.

From structured cabling and fiber backbones to wireless, DAS and emergency communications, SystemOne can coordinate multiple technology systems as part of a single construction project.
